Aftercare
Upper lid blepharoplasty revitalises your eyes by removing excess skin. However, a successful outcome can only be protected if a dedicated aftercare routine is followed. Our medical director, Dr Phoebe Jones, here at Beauty by Doctor in Bondi Junction, has what you need to know and some tips to enhance your recovery.
Essential Aftercare Practices
Adhere to Doctor's Instructions: Your doctor's personalised instructions are vital. Ask questions if anything needs to be clarified. Take medications (antibiotics and pain relief) as directed.
Cleanse Gently: Use a cool, sterile saline compress to clean wound edges carefully—no scrubbing or rubbing, only gentle dabbing. Pat the area dry with a clean, soft cloth.
Lubricate Eyes: Some people may experience dry or irritated eyes during the healing process. Over-the-counter eye drops or ointments can keep your eyes moist. Follow their directions closely.
Manage Swelling: Apply cold compresses (wrapped in a clean cloth) for 15-20 minute sessions several times daily. This is especially important during the first 48 hours to reduce swelling.
Be Careful with Exercise: As directed by your doctor, avoid anything that is high impact or raises your blood pressure significantly (heavy lifting, intense workouts) as these can increase the intraocular pressure or put too much pressure on the wound edges. Gentle walking or light weights are usually okay. If you perform anything that causes discomfort to the eye area - stop immediately.
Protect Your Eyes: Limit screen time and reading initially. Always wear sunglasses with UV protection when outdoors – this is crucial for several months after surgery.
Avoid Eye Makeup: Avoid eye makeup for at least 1-2 weeks or as recommended by your doctor.
The Healing Timeline
Days 1-3: Discomfort, swelling, and bruising are typical. Cold compresses and over-the-counter pain relief usually help. Some minor bleeding from wound edges is common. You can gently dab this away with a clean damp cloth.
Day 6 or 7: Suture removal. Then another couple of days before makeup can be applied.
Weeks 1-3: Bruising and swelling diminish, though some tightness around your eyelids is normal. The incision line is usually pink/red, but can be covered with makeup. This fades over months.
Weeks 3-6: Most noticeable swelling is gone, and your rejuvenated eyelids continue to improve.
Months 3-6: Final results emerge as any subtle swelling resolves. You'll enjoy your refreshed look.
More Recovery Tips
Hygiene is Key: Bathe or shower as directed but keep soap and shampoo away from your eyes.
Rest Up: Adequate sleep allows your body to focus on a full recovery.
LED Healite Treatments: If you live close to the clinic, you are welcome to complimentary Healite treatments, which can aid in the short-term recovery of the treatment.
Avoid Smoking/Alcohol: These substances hinder the healing process.
Follow-ups Matter: Attend all appointments to ensure proper healing and address any concerns.
Important Note: Healing varies between individuals. Contact Beauty By Doctor immediately if you experience unexpected pain, bleeding, or other concerning symptoms.
