Possible Microneedling Complications: What You Need to Know

Microneedling is a procedure used on the face, body, and scalp that involves the use of fine needles to create controlled micro-injury in the skin. This process is used as part of treatment plans addressing skin quality, texture, and certain scalp concerns. As with any procedure involving the skin, there are potential risks and complications. These are uncommon and are outlined not to cause concern, but as part of our responsibility to provide clear and comprehensive information to support informed decision-making.

Understanding these risks allows for appropriate treatment planning and aftercare.

    Understanding the Risks
Microneedling is performed in a controlled clinical setting; however, individual responses may vary depending on skin type, treatment depth, and the area treated. Awareness of potential complications supports informed consent and appropriate management if required.

    Redness and Swelling
What It Is: Temporary redness and swelling of the treated area due to the controlled skin response.
    How Common: Common following treatment.
How Long It Lasts: Typically settles within 24 to 72 hours, though this may vary depending on treatment intensity.
Management: Usually self-limiting; aftercare guidance may be provided.

    Sensitivity or Irritation
What It Is: Increased skin sensitivity, dryness, or mild irritation following treatment.
    How Common: Common.
How Long It Lasts: Generally short-term during the healing phase.
Management: Managed with appropriate skincare and aftercare.

    Bruising
What It Is: Minor bruising caused by needle penetration or small vessel disruption.
    How Common: Uncommon.
How Long It Lasts: Typically resolves within several days.
    Management: Usually self-limiting.

    Infection
What It Is: Bacterial infection associated with disruption of the skin barrier.
How Common: Uncommon when appropriate sterile technique and aftercare are followed.
How Long It Lasts: Varies depending on severity.
Management: May require medical treatment and review.

    Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)
What It Is: Temporary darkening of the skin following inflammation, particularly in individuals with higher pigment levels.
    How Common: Uncommon but recognised.
How Long It Lasts: May resolve over weeks to months.
Management: May include topical treatments and adjustment of future treatment parameters.

    Track Marks or Textural Changes
What It Is: Visible linear marks or uneven skin texture following treatment.
    How Common: Rare.
How Long It Lasts: Often temporary but may persist in some cases.
Management: Reviewed and managed based on clinical presentation.

    Minimising Your Risk
Risk may be reduced through appropriate clinical assessment, selection of suitable treatment parameters, and adherence to aftercare instructions. Providing a complete medical history, including any skin conditions or sensitivities, allows for a tailored approach.
