Essential Aftercare for Optimal Skin Renewal: Your Guide to Healing After Ultraclear or CO2 Laser Treatment
Key Principles of Post-Treatment Care
Follow Your Doctor's Advice: Dr Phoebe Jones and our team will provide personalised aftercare instructions. Prioritise these guidelines for optimal results. Take any medications as directed.
Cleanse Gently: Use a mild fragrance-free cleanser or other BBD recommended product and lukewarm water. Pat your skin dry.
Hydrate the Skin: Apply a BBD-recommended balm twice a day to nourish the skin and minimise irritation. Alternatively, you can use a simple emollient product such as QV Intensive,Vaseline, etc. Apply a generous layer of Vaseline before bed.
Careful Infection Control: The skin barrier has been temporarily breached from the treatment, so good infection control is important. Washing hands, sleeping on clean pillow cases, disinfecting phone cases and commonly touched surfaces, etc. is recommended.
Resist Picking: Avoid scratching or picking at the skin to prevent scarring and let it heal naturally. Some people can experience itchiness a few days into recovery. We recommend taking an over-the-counter oral antihistamine to help alleviate these symptoms.
Watch for Infection: Report any unusual redness, swelling, excessive pain, or discharge to BBD immediately.
Understanding Your Recovery Timeline
Recovery varies based on the laser treatment and intensity. Your practitioner will inform you of this as part of the consultation and decision-making process. Here's an overview:
Redness & Mild Swelling: Common for a week on average after.
Crusting/Scabbing: Scabs should be resolved in a week, give or take a few days depending upon treatment intensity.
Discomfort: Some discomfort is expected. Manage with over-the-counter pain relief if needed.
Peeling/Flaking: Natural skin renewal process – don't pick; let it shed on its own.
Full Results: This will usually take weeks to months. You should continue to see improvements for 6 months. Be patient and consistent with your aftercare routine.
Additional Tips for a Speedy Recovery
Cold Therapy: Apply cold compresses to reduce swelling and ease discomfort.
Elevation: If your face or neck was treated, sleep with your head elevated to manage swelling.
While Sleeping: If your face or neck was treated, sleep on your back with your head and shoulders well elevated with pillows. If you have long hair, tie it back to keep hair away from your face and neck.
LED HeaLite: If you live close by to the clinic you are welcome to come in for complimentary use of the HeaLite, which can assist in short term recovery.
Hygiene: Cleanse gently as directed. Avoid submerging the area for long periods (pools, etc.).
Hydration Boost: Drink plenty of fluids to support your body's healing process.
Mind Your Stress: Stress slows healing – practice relaxation techniques if needed.
Follow-Ups: Attend all your scheduled appointments for expert monitoring.
