Understanding Seborrheic Keratoses - Causes and Treatment Options

Seborrheic keratoses are common benign skin growths that often appear as raised lesions with a waxy, scaly, or wart-like texture. While they are not cancerous, some people seek assessment or treatment because of their appearance, location, or because the lesion catches on clothing or becomes irritated.

Seborrheic keratoses commonly develop with age and may occur on areas such as the face, chest, back, and shoulders. These growths can vary in colour from light tan to dark brown and often have a rough or waxy surface. The exact cause is not fully understood, although genetics and age are thought to play a role. Sun exposure may also contribute in some cases.

When Seborrheic Keratoses May Need Assessment
Seborrheic keratoses are usually harmless, but they can sometimes resemble other skin lesions. For this reason, any new, changing, irritated, or unusual lesion should be assessed by a qualified practitioner before treatment is considered. Treatment may also be discussed where lesions are bothersome, repeatedly irritated, or cosmetically unwanted.

    Treatment Options for Seborrheic Keratoses
At our clinic, treatment options for seborrheic keratoses may include the following, depending on the lesion type, location, and individual assessment.

    RF (Radiofrequency) Removal
RF removal uses radiofrequency energy to remove raised benign lesions in a controlled manner. This approach may be suitable for selected seborrheic keratoses and is performed in clinic. Recovery time varies depending on the size and location of the lesion treated.

    UltraClear
UltraClear may be considered in selected cases as part of a treatment approach for superficial skin lesions and textural irregularities. Suitability depends on the nature of the lesion and a clinical assessment. Not all seborrheic keratoses are appropriate for laser-based treatment.

Assessment and Treatment at Our Clinic
A personalised assessment is undertaken to determine whether a lesion is consistent with seborrheic keratosis and whether treatment is appropriate. If treatment proceeds, the approach recommended will depend on factors such as the size, thickness, location, and appearance of the lesion, as well as your skin type and medical history.

Procedures are performed in clinic. Anaesthesia or topical numbing may be used where appropriate to support comfort. After treatment, temporary redness, crusting, or pigment change may occur, and aftercare instructions will be provided. Recovery and outcomes vary between individuals.
