Essential Aftercare for Optimal Skin Renewal: Your Guide to Healing After Ultraclear or CO2 Laser Treatment

    Key Principles of Post-Treatment Care

    Follow Your Doctor’s Advice:
Our team will provide personalised aftercare instructions. Prioritise these guidelines for optimal results. Take any medications as directed.

    Cleanse Gently:
Use the vinegar wash provided for the first 3 days. Apply to a cotton pad and dab gently—do not wipe or buff! After the initial few days, you may switch to a mild, fragrance-free cleanser or a BBD-recommended product and lukewarm water. Always pat the skin dry – no wiping.

    Barrier Protection at Home:
When you return home from the procedure:
    • Wash your hands thoroughly.
    • Apply a generous amount of barrier cream (e.g. Vaseline) to the treated area.
    • Before bed, apply a liberal layer and lay down a clean pillowcase with a disposable bluey mat on top.
    • In the morning, you may notice dried blood or seeping under the Vaseline—this is totally normal.
    • Run a warm shower on light to medium pressure and let the water gently run over your face to lightly wash Vaseline and blood residue naturally. Do not rub or use a washer—let the gentle water pressure do the work.
    • Pat dry with a clean towel.

    Use the Vinegar Wash Solution:
After drying, gently dab the treated area with the vinegar wash (five parts cooled boiled water to one-part white vinegar) using clean cotton pads. This may sting slightly but is a great mild antiseptic and helps with healing. Again, do not buff or wipe.

    Healing Serum:
A specialised healing serum can be very helpful, helpful but is not essential. BBD recommends Alastin Skin Nectar ($249.00) to support and accelerate healing and we sell this in clinic. From our experience this usually takes up to a few days off the recovery times. This serum can be used twice daily underneath your barrier cream.

    Apply Healing Products:
After the vinegar wash, you may apply your healing serum (e.g. Alastin Skin Nectar or TR Pro+). If not using a serum, reapply a protective layer of barrier cream such as Vaseline, Amolin, or pawpaw ointment—ensure there are no active ingredients. Continue this morning and night. If you are using a healing serum, reapply a layer of barrier cream over the top.

    Careful Infection Control:
The skin barrier has been temporarily compromised. Take extra precautions:
    • Wash hands before touching your face
    • Use clean pillowcases and towels
    • Disinfect frequently used items (phones, glasses, etc.)

    Resist Picking:
Do not pick or scratch at your skin. Mild itching a few days into healing is normal. An over-the-counter oral antihistamine (such as Telfast) can help relieve this.

    Watch for Infection:
Contact BBD immediately if you experience persistent redness, swelling, pus, worsening pain, or unusual discharge.

    Understanding Your Recovery Timeline
Recovery will depend on the intensity of your treatment. Your practitioner will advise you accordingly. A general guideline is:
    • Redness & Mild Swelling: May persist for 3–7 days.
    • Crusting or Scabbing: Typically resolves within 7–10 days.
    • Discomfort: Some discomfort is normal. Use over-the-counter pain relief if needed.
    • Peeling & Flaking: A natural part of healing. Do not exfoliate—let it slough off on its own.
    • Visible Results: Improvements continue over weeks to months. Many patients notice progressive changes for up to 6 months post-treatment.

Additional Tips for a Speedy Recovery
    • Cold Compress: Can help reduce swelling and soothe discomfort during the first 48 hours. Ensure a clean towel is used over any ice pack to prevent infection.
    • Sleeping Position: Sleep on your back with head slightly elevated. Tie back long hair if applicable.
    • LED HeaLite Therapy: You're welcome to return for complimentary LED HeaLite treatments post-procedure to enhance recovery and reduce inflammation.
    • Avoid Submersion: Do not submerge the treated area in pools, baths, or spas until fully healed.
    • Hydration: Drink plenty of water and prioritise nutrient-rich foods to support internal healing.
    • Avoid Stress: High stress may impede skin repair. Rest and mindfulness practices can support better outcomes.
    • Attend Follow-Up Appointments: These allow us to monitor your progress and adjust care if necessary.
